Chapter 17

ONE CONDITION

ORLANDO SITS ON THE PLUSH loveseat near the fireplace in his study. Crystal goblets sparkle on pretty, floral-print placemats on the coffee table in front of him. Ruby red candles flicker from silver candelabra at the center, and a vase full of the prettiest bouquet of flowers of all colors glitter in a multifaceted glass vase. On the floor, three giant pillows make extra seating, and on the part of the table next to Orlando rests a covered tray that I’m sure has food on it for me.

“Precious Jewel, it’s so nice to see you,” Orlando says, standing up from his place.

“Can you not call me that anymore?” I ask him, suppressing the hundreds of times he’s used the pet name out of affection. “Your mind games ruined it for me.”

He blinks a few times in consideration. “Okay, I suppose I deserve that.”

I bite my tongue to stop my rebel mouth from telling him that of course he deserves it. But I know my sarcasm and anger might be better kept locked away, especially since we’re here to inform him of our decision to join the Ortega Coven.

Appearing from the bedroom, Austin distracts me enough that I break my gaze from Orlando. Austin rolls out his medical table with his blood draw equipment. He keeps everything he needs to extract my blood in several places throughout the estate along with supplies in case of injury. Usually, Austin draws my blood in the dining room when we’re all together, but Orlando asked to eat in here away from my little cousins and other human guests.

Orlando beckons me forward. “I do hope you slept well, Jewel.”

“She didn’t,” Kingston says, sliding his hand around my waist to guide me into the room when my feet refuse to move right away. “Took her until an hour before sunset to even close her eyes.”

I dig my fingers into his side at his comment. We both know that his words are only true because he kept me up a while longer after his brothers went back to their rooms.

Orlando remains expressionless.

“She slept half the night, though,” he adds. “Might be extra bitey because we missed lunch.”

Yeah, because I nearly drank a whole day’s worth of his blood while he skipped out on mine. He managed to bite his own shoulder in an attempt to try something new, and it turned out rather successful.

“I’m only a little hungry,” I murmur, the memory of our night flitting through my mind.

Kingston gives me a little squeeze and winks, smirking. “Except your eyes flashed at the thought. You can’t deny your blood lust.”

“Whatever. Can we just eat before I devour the lot of you?” I smile at Kingston. “You’ll be first.”

He flashes his fangs. “I’m ready, babe.”

Brayla’s soft footsteps draw my attention from Kingston, and we both turn to look over our shoulders to watch her stroll down the hall at a human’s pace. I haven’t seen her since after the explosion, but she smiles at me like her usual self.
